Review Your Insurance Before the Storm!

Whether you are a homeowner, condo owner or renter – be sure to review your insurance BEFORE the storm! Know what you are and are NOT covered for. Don’t wait until the National Weather Service has issued a watch or warning for the area you live in to check on coverage. Insurance carriers restrict adding coverage or issuing new policies during severe weather. The restriction usually applies for 24 hours after the weather has cleared.

Here in Hampton Roads, property insurance policies typically have more than just one flat deductible. Knowing that we often have high winds, it’s important to pay attention to your policy. If you are lucky to have a flat deductible for all claims, that’s great! Most policies have a standard all peril deductible for most claims. But they also have a hurricane, tropical cyclone or wind/hail deductible. Those are usually a percentage of the dwelling coverage such as 1%, 2% and 5%. So if you have a wind/hail deductible and have damage to your roof from winds even without a severe storm present, you will be subject to the percentage based deductible. Having a hurricane deductible is beneficial since hurricanes come far less often than high winds. Be sure to talk to your agent or contact our office for a free policy review.
